The Role of a Doula: Support and Inform, Not Takeover
The Role of a Doula: Support, Not Takeover
A doula is not there to take over your pregnancy, your birth, or your decisions.
A doula is there to empower you to advocate for yourself.
Our job is to help you understand your options, ask questions, communicate your wishes, and feel confident making decisions about your care.
There may be moments when you’re tired, overwhelmed, scared, in pain, or simply unable to advocate for yourself the way you normally would. That’s when your doula can step in and help support your voice.
But here’s the important part:
We don’t make those calls for you based on what we think you should do. We make them based on what you have already told us matters to you.
That’s why the conversations we have before labor are so important.
We learn what you want. We learn what you’re comfortable with. We learn what you don’t want. We talk through different possibilities and help you think about how you might respond if things don’t go according to plan.
Then, when the moment comes, your doula isn’t guessing.
We’re supporting you.
🧠 And Then There’s BRAIN
One of the tools doulas often use to help families slow down and make informed decisions is BRAIN:
B — Benefits
What are the benefits of this option?
R — Risks
What are the potential risks?
A — Alternatives
Are there other options available?
I — Intuition
What is your gut telling you?
N — Nothing / Next
What happens if we wait? Do we need to decide right now?
BRAIN isn’t about telling you what choice to make.
It’s about helping you have the information and space to make your own choice.
And that’s really the heart of doula support.
We don’t replace your voice. We help you find it, use it, and feel confident standing behind it.
A doula isn’t your decision-maker.
We’re part of your support team.
